Why join CompetentRoofer?

CompetentRoofer is a Government-licenced Competent Person Scheme that allows roofing contractors to self-certify their own roof refurbishment work as compliant with the Building Regulations in England and Wales. 

The process is simple:

1.  Registered contractors logs the work online, prior to commencing on site.
2.  When the roof refurbishment work is completed, the contractor notifies us.
3.  CompetentRoofer issue the building owner with a Building Regulations Compliance Certificate               (BRCC) and notify the relevant Local Authority with the correct paperwork that the work has been           completed. No need to wait for a Local Authority Inspection.


Additional benefits of being a CompetentRoofer:

  • Applies to reportable roof refurbishment work on all types of buildings – domestic, commercial or industrial – no job is too big or too small.
  • A ten year insolvency guarantee is included with notification of roof refurbishment works up to a value of £50,000 (including access and VAT) where the building height is four storeys or less.
  • Added peace of mind for your clients; we audit and inspect our members upon application and inspect at least twice per year thereafter.
  • Website listing; members of the public can find a CompetentRoofer near them, leading to increased business.
  • Members can log into a members area on our website to view and download our Building Regulations Handbook and leaflets for clients.
  • CompetentRoofer members can also apply to be accredited as Green Deal approved Installers to undertake Green Deal and ECO work.
  • Help reduce the number of clients going to ‘cowboy’ builders who offer cheap, uninsured and unregulated work.

What's the joining process?

To join all you need to do is supply us with full contact details by completing the form below. We will then start the application process for you by sending you an email with  personal login details for our website where you can complete the online registration and upload the necessary supporting documents.  An application joining fee will also be required at this stage; payment for which can be taken over the phone - 0207 448 3189 - upon receipt of this application email.

Once the initial application is complete, it will then be reviewed and submitted for a probity check.  From there an audit and inspection will be carried out by a CompetentRoofer Surveyor and reviewed by our Technical Manager.

If your company passes, we would approve your application, making you a registered contractor of the scheme; you would then be able to log jobs via on our online system and thereby self-certify your own roof refurbishment work.

Costs of Membership


All prices shown are inclusive of VAT:

One-off Joining Fee*: £474 (£395 + VAT)

Annual Membership Fee**: £510 (£425 + VAT)

Building Control Certificate Fee***: £48 (£40 + VAT)


Discounts may be available via trade associations - contact your trade association to find out more.

*The joining fee is non-refundable.

**This covers the cost of two site inspections each year. The fee is collected by Direct Debit in 12 monthly instalments.

***The certificate cost for notification of roof refurbishment for an average domestic house (up to the value of £25,000) with a 10 year insurance warranty.  For commercial/industrial projects, certificate costs and the number of inspections required may vary.  These costs are also collected by Direct Debit.
